The Wonder of Publix Subs / Flamingo to Become State Bird? / Marijuana Laws

1. A pink, plastic, Flamingo lawn ornament in the front yard is the vision that some people have of houses here in Florida, and with that one might assume that the Flamingo is a state bird. Well, it’s not, but it might be soon. – WLRN

2. On Sunday March 10 at 2am we will all move our clocks forward one hour for the beginning of Daylight Savings time (subtle reminder for you there!). But if a trio of Florida politicians get their way, it could mean the end of having to reset our clocks twice a year. – People

3. If you prefer plastic straws over paper straws, you may get 5 more years to enjoy them here. A number of Florida municipalities have taken steps toward banning plastic straws, but a new bill that advanced through a state Senate committee this week would prohibit local municipalities from banning them for five years. – The Hill

4. If you were to turn on the TV news in Florida this week you would have likely seen the news that Publix Subs were on sale until Sunday. If you think its a bit of a reach for a sandwich going on sale to be considered newsworthy, you lack an understanding of the enthusiasm people have for Publix Subs. Here’s Southern Living to bring you up to speed. – Southern Living

5. In 2016, 71 percent of Florida voters approved of the legalization of medical marijuana and in 2017 Florida lawmakers partially granted their wish by allowing the use of medical marijuana oils and baked goods, but banning smokeable marijuana. This week though, the Florida Senate voted 34-4 to remove that ban. The bill now heads to the House. – Orlando Sentinel

6. Floridians can’t complain about their state income tax, because there is none. I joke in my book that the State’s cities and counties make up for the deficit with speeding tickets and property taxes. A recent study put out by WalletHub shows that, as far as property tax costs are concerned, we are right about the middle of the road compared to the rest of the country, so, maybe that’s not so bad. – WalletHub

7. 9. If you watch any HGTV, you know about the growing popularity of Tiny Houses. But current building codes, zoning and other regulations severely restrict where you can actually have one here in Florida. One state representative from Orlando is trying to change that. – FLAPOL

10. One of the most unique church services in all of Florida takes place right across the street from my condo. The Daytona Beach Drive-In Christian Church has been holding car-based worship services here since 1953. Prior to that it was a Drive-In movie theater.
